Sweet Potato Pie

Sweet Potato Pie

1 Recipe of your favorite pie crust.
2 cups cooked, mashed Sweet potatoes (yams).
3 beaten eggs
½ to ¾ cup brown sugar, barley malt, syrup, or honey.
1 tsp. cinnamon.
½ tsp. cloves.
¼ tsp. nutmeg.
½ tsp. allspice.
1 scant tsp. salt.
1 ½ cups evaporated milk (or mixed nonfat dry milk, goat milk, soy milk, or cashew milk).
Whipped cream for topping (optional).

Prepare crust and put into a 9 to 10 inch pie plate.  In a large bowl, beat together all the other ingredients except whipped cream.  Beat thoroughly and pour into pie shell.  Bake in preheated 375 degree oven for nearly an hour.  Cool before serving.  Serves six to eight people.

Sweet potatoes: neutral, sweet; SP/ST/L.I.; Strengthens SP, Tonifies qi/blood.
Eggs: sweet, neutral; nourishes yin/blood, lubricates dryness.
Milk: sweet, neutral; strengthens weakness, Tonifies qi, blood, and yin, lubricates dryness.
Honey: Sweet, neutral; SP, ST. Harmonizes middle jiao.
Cinnamon: acrid, sweet, hot; HT/KD/LV/SP. Warms and Tonifies yang, disperses cold, moves blood.
Overall, this recipe tonifies the SP/ST, nourishes yin and blood, and benefits KD/LU.

Hong Dou Tang (Red Bean Soup)

Hong Dou Tang (Red Bean Soup)

Treatment Principle: strengthens SP, regulates qi, dispels Phlegm, drains Damp, promotes urination.

Serves 4

2/3 cup dried azuki beans
1/2 dried tangerine peel (chen pi) torn into pieces
3/4 cup of brown sugar or Chinese hong tang

Soak the azuki beans overnight in 4 cups of water.

Bring to a boil, reduce to medium low, add the tangerine peel, cover the pan and cook for 30 minutes. Add a further 4 cups of water and bring back to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cook for a further 30 minutes.

To test to see if they are ready, press one bean between the fingers. It should crush without any effort. If it is still hard, cook for another 15 to 20 minutes, then check again.
Add half of the sugar to the pan containing the beans and stir gently continuing to add more sugar until it is sweet to your taste. Simmer for a few minutes longer.

Serve hot.

Azuki Beans: sweet sour neutral HT SP SI
Actions: strengthens the SP, promotes urination, and eliminates stagnant Blood.
Indications: SP deficiency edema, Damp and Damp Heat painful urination, diarrhea, leucorrhea, intestinal abscess, hemorrhoids, bleeding from the bowel.

Brown Sugar: sweet warm SP ST LV
Actions: supplements middle jiao, expels cold, invigorates blood, moves LV qi.
Indications: middle jiao deficiency cold, menstrual cramps, post childbirth recovery.

Chen Pi: acrid, bitter, warm, aromatic LU SP ST
Actions: regulates the qi, adjusts the middle, and relieves the diaphragm, dries dampness and transforms phlegm, prevents stagnation.
Indications: epigastric or abdominal distention, fullness, bloating, belching, nausea and vomiting, damp turbidity obstructing the middle with a stifling sensation in the chest, loss of appetite, fatigue, loose stools, thick greasy tongue coat.

Red Bean Soup (composite): aromatic sweet sour warm HT SP ST LV LU SI
Actions: adjusts and supplements middle jiao, promotes urination, invigorates Blood and eliminates stagnant Blood, expels cold, regulates and moves the qi, dries dampness and transforms phlegm.

Baked Oatmeal with Mixed Berries and Plums

Baked Oatmeal with Mixed Berries and Plums - Makes 6 servings

Adapted from recipe on


  • 1 cup Blueberries-sour, sweet, warm, tonifies kidney
  • ½ cup Cranberries-sour, cooling, strengthens kidney
  • ½ cup Raspberries-slightly warm, sweet, sour, tonifies kidney
  • 3 medium plums, sliced-slightly warm, sweet, sour, regulates body fluids
  • 2 cups oats-sweet, warm, supplements vacuity, rejuvenates nervous and reproductive systems
  • 1 cup walnuts, toasted and chopped, divided into ½ cup servings-slightly warm, sweet, tonifies kidney
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar-warm, sweet, strengthens digestion, warms body
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon-hot, pungent, sweet, warms body
  • ½ tsp. sea salt-cold, salty, slightly sweet, strengthens kidney
  • 2 cups almond milk-sweet, neutral, supplements spleen
  • 1 large egg-sweet, neutral, supplements qi
  • 1 ½ tbsp. unsalted butter, plus more for greasing the pan- sweet, neutral, supplements qi
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract


1. Preheat oven to 375, grease an 8-inch baking dish. Layer sliced plums in the bottom of the dish.  Top with mixed berries.

2. In a medium bowl, combine oats, ½ cup walnuts, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Mix well, and pour the dry ingredients over the fruit.

3. Combine almond milk, egg, butter and vanilla, and whisk well.

4. Pour the milk mixture over the oat mixture. Top with remaining ½ cup walnuts.

5. Bake for about 40 minutes, until the top is golden brown and the oat mixture appears solid. Remove the dish from the oven, and allow the oatmeal to cool for a few minutes. Serve warm.

Pork and Black Beans

Pork ‘n black beans
Yields 6 servings

2 cans of black beans
1/3 up packed brown sugar
1 small onion, chopped
¼ cup catsup
4-6 slices of bacon

1. Add all the ingredients into a 1½ quart casserole, top with slices of bacon and bake for 1 ½ hours at 350 degrees.

TCM analysis: Overall tonifies KD yin.

Sauteed Asian Pears with Citrus Zest

Sautéed Asian Pears With Citrus Zest

*2 Asian Pears
*1 TBS Butter
*2 TBS Brown Sugar
*1 TSP Orange Rind
*1 TBS Orange Juice

Peel, core, and slice 2 Asian pears (or other variety). Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons brown sugar, stirring until melted. Add pear, 1 teaspoon grated orange rind, and 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice; cook 5 minutes or until pear is slightly tender. Remove from pan with a slotted spoon; divide among 4 plates. Allow pan juices to thicken; drizzle over pear.

This recipes moistens dryness in the LU, supplements qi as well as moving a little qi for balance.

Donkey Hide Gelatin and Glutinous Rice Congee
(4-6 servings)

30 g e jiao, crushed
50g glutinous rice
50g millet
50g purple rice
50g brown sugar

1. Put the glutinous rice, millet and purple rice in 6-8 cups of water (depending on preferred consistency). Bring to a boil and simmer for 40 minutes.
2. Add the brown sugar and the gelatin. Bring back to a boil, mix thoroughly, and serve.

E Jiao is sweet and neutral, it tonifies and nourishes blood, stops bleeding, and nourishes yin. Glutinous rice is sweet, neutral and slightly binding, it supplements qi, and warms and strengthens MJ. Purple rice is sweet and neutral, it supplements qi and harmonizes the MJ. Millet is sweet, slightly salty and cool, harmonizes MJ, drains damp heat, moistens dryness, and supplements KD. Brown sugar is sweet and warm, supplements MJ, expels cold, and invigorates blood.
Overall, the congee is sweet, acrid, neutral and warm. It goes to the SP and ST, nourishes blood, harmonizes the Stomach, enhances the immune system, and strengthens the body’s resistance to disease.

Harmonizing Apple Cake

Harmonizing Apple Cake

¾ cups maple syrup
½ cups brown sugar
4 coarsely chopped granny smith apples
1 cup butter, melted
18 grams Mei Gui Hua
18 grams Fo Shou
2 eggs, lightly beaten
1 ½ cups whole wheat flour
1 ½ cups rice flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
1tsp cinnamon
½ cup Da Zao, soaked overnight, chopped and pitted
½ cup walnuts
¹â„₃ cup maple syrup
¹â„₃ cup lemon juice (about 2 lemons)

Preheat oven to 325°
Melt butter in a saucepan and add Mei Gui Hua and Fo Shou; keep over very low heat for 20 minutes. Strain out the herbs and set aside the butter. In another bowl, mix ¾ cups maple syrup, brown sugar, and apples together. Add the herbed butter and eggs, sift in dry ingredients and stir well. Add walnuts and Da Zao.
Bake in greased and floured 9X12 pan for 45-60 minutes.
Mix together 1/3 cups each of maple syrup and lemon juice; spoon over the cake when warm out of the oven.

Makes 18 pieces of cake

Lian zi Bai he Lian ao Tong shui

Bai he: 30g
Lian zi: 30g
Lian ao: 50g
Brown sugar: 20g

How to cook:
1.Wash all ingredients( don’t wash brown sugar)
2. Slice lian ao
3. boil water
4. add Lian zi and bai he 30 mins in 2
5. add Lian ao  and cook another 30 mins and add brown sugar at the very end
( this is lazy way to cook TONG SHUI) coz lots people will cook brown sugar and water separate instead add at the very end
6. cool before serving

Serving size: 5 people
