Vegan Cassava Cake

2 lbs cassava grated

1 can coconut milk

½ lbs coconut meat

1 cup mangosteen juice

handful of goji berries

Directions: pre heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, mix all ingredients together until evenly dispersed in baking tray, place in oven for 60 minutes or until top becomes golden brown.

Serving Size: 15

TCM Evaluation: cassava is sweet and neutral and nourishing to SP and ST, clears heat; coconut milk is sweet and neutral, strengthens the body, reduces swelling; coconut meat is sweet and warm, strengthens the body and stops bleeding; mangosteen juice is sweet and cool; goji berries are sweet, sour and neutral, nourishes blood and yin, improves vision.




Cranberry and Goji Berry Chutney with Shu di Huang

Cranberry and Goji Berry Chutney with Shu di Huang


  • 9 grams Shu di Huang
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon fresh grated ginger
  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup goji berries
  • pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup chopped dried apricots
  • pinch allspice
  • 1 medium shallot, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup apple cider
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2/3 cup white or brown sugar or 1 cup brown rice syrup
  • one orange, Zest of
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup



  1. Combine cranberries, goji berries, apricots and shallots in saucepan.
  2. Add cider and enough water to cover. Let sit for 20 – 30 minutes.
  3. Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer.
  4. Cook for 15 minutes, or until goji berries are soft and plump, and the cranberries pop.
  5. Stir in sugar, maple syrup, spices and salt.
  6. Cook 5 minutes longer.
  7. Adjust seasonings. Remove from heat.
  8. Stir in walnuts and orange zest.
  9. Cool to room temperature.
  10. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Fish Soup– Serves 3 to 4

1 (1-2 inch) piece of ginger, finely chopped

2 cloves of garlic minced

¼ cup goji berries

2 tablespoons rice wine

5 cups water

1 pound fresh salmon (boned and cut into 1-2 inch chunks)

½, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces.

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon dark sesame oil

Overall TCM Functions:

This dish strengthens Kidneys to counteract fatigue and insomnia.  It Nourishes yin and fluids.

Salmon- sweet, neutral, SP/KD. Strengthens spleen, nourishes yin, blood, and KD jing.

Ginger- pungent, warm, LU, SP, ST. Stops nausea and vomiting, detoxifies other herbs, reduces inflammation.

Soy Sauce- salty, cold, SP, ST, KD. Harmonizes middle jiao, clears heat.

Clove- pungent, warm, ST, KD. Dispels internal cold, warms the KD, stops pain.

Rice wine- pungent, sweet, warm, ST, LV, HT. Expels cold, invigorates blood, stops pain

Goji berries, sweet, neutral, KD, LV, LU. Nourishes LV and KD, moistens LU.

Sesame oil- nourishes yin and fluids, helps to expel phlegm.

Champion Chicken with Goji Berries

Champion Chicken with Goji Berries, modified 


2 tbsp. olive oil

2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced

1 piece of ginger, (.5-1 inches long)

1 roasting chicken, skinned and cut up, or 3-4 lbs of skinless legs / breasts (ok to substitute

chicken breasts)

2 medium green onions, chopped into ½ inch pieces, tips and roots discarded

3-4 tbsp. rice wine or dry sherry

2 tbsp soy sauce, or to taste

2 tbsp goji berries

1 ½ c. water or chicken stock

1 tsp. toasted sesame oil

1 medium sized piece of dried tangerine peel (chen pi)

1 tsp. star anise, ground, or one piece, crushed


1. Heat oil in a pot big enough to hold all of the ingredients, add garlic and ginger and cook

until garlic is golden

2. Add the chicken, green onions, wine, soy sauce, goji berries, tangerine peel, and star

anise to the pot.

3. Bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and lower the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 30

minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through.

4. Sprinkle with sesame oil as a garnish.

5. Serve in a bowl with some of the broth, or on top of quinoa with the broth as a gravy.

This dish would be delicious with lightly cooked asparagus, and a glass of red wine or

unsweetened cranberry juice and water with a twist of lemon.

Pattern: LV and KD yin xu, LV blood not nourishing eyes, LV blood xu, Qi xu

Recipe analysis: This dish benefits the eyes (goji berries), tonifies the and moves the qi (chicken

and tangerine peel), warms the KD yang (star anise, garlic), warms the ST (ginger, garlic), and

nourishes the blood and strengthens the LV and KD (goji berries), chicken, sherry or rice wine,

soy sauce, stock). With quinoa, it reinforces the KD focus of the chicken. Adding asparagus to the

meal contributes a nice cooling counterpoint to the warm, acrid nature of the wine and star anise,

while nourishing the lungs.

Goji Berry and Fish Soup

Goji Berry and Fish Soup
4-6 servings
(Adapted from

1-2 fillets of whitefish (or fish of choice)
½ c goji berries
1 c shiitake mushrooms
1 scallion, chopped
5 thin slices of fresh ginger
5 c low-sodium broth
1-2 T rice wine
Mrs. Dash or other salt substitute
½ t Hoisin or plum sauce

1. Smear fish with 1 T of rice wine and a little Mrs. Dash/salt substitute, set aside.
2. Bring the broth to a boil in a large saucepan.
3. Place the seasoned fish into the saucepan containing the stock.
4. Add in the goji berries, mushrooms, scallion, ginger and hoisin or plum sauce.
5. Simmer the soup until the fish is done (about 20 minutes).
6. If needed for taste, add another 1 T rice wine and salt substitute before serving.

TCM Analysis:
Whitefish: neutral, sweet; SP, LU, KD. Regulate fluids, strengthen SP.
Goji berries: neutral, sweet; LU, LV, KD. Nourish LV/KD, improve vision, moisten LU.
Shiitake mushrooms: neutral, sweet; ST, KD. Strengthen ST, regulate qi, lower BP, promote healing.
Scallion: acrid, warm; LU, LI. Release exterior, invigorate blood, drain damp.
Ginger: pungent, warm; LU, SP, ST. Disperse cold, stop nausea/vomiting, detoxify, reduce inflammation.
Broth: warm and harmonize MJ.
Rice wine: warm, acrid, sweet. Promote circulation.
Mrs. Dash or other salt substitute
Hoisin or plum sauce: acrid, sweet, salty. Harmonize MJ, strengthen KD.

Overall, this recipe nourishes LV/KD, invigorates blood, promotes circulation, regulates fluids, and harmonizes the MJ. Even though it has several warm ingredients, it can be used in cases of LV yang rising when due to LV/KD yin deficiency as it will nourish the yin to anchor yang.

Champion Chicken with Goji Berries

Champion Chicken with Goji Berries 4 servings

2 tablespoons vegetable oil, such as canola or olive
2 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1 (1/2- to 1-inch) piece fresh ginger, peeled and minced
1 roasting chicken, skinned and cut up, or 3 to 4 pounds of skinless legs and/or breasts
2 medium-sized green onions, chopped into 1/2-inch pieces, roots and tough tips discarded
3-4 tablespoons rice wine or dry sherry
2 tablespoons soy sauce, or to taste
2 tablespoons (30 grams) goji berries (gou qi zi)
1 1/2 cups water or vegetable or chicken stock
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil

Heat oil in a pan, then add garlic and ginger and cook until garlic is golden (about 5 minutes.

Place chicken, garlic, ginger, green onion, wine, soy sauce, goji berries and water in a pot.

Bring mixture to a boil, then cover and lower heat to a simmer. Cook for about 30 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

Sprinkle sesame oil on top as a finishing touch.

Serve in a bowl with some of the broth or on top of rice with the broth as a gravy.

Warms ST, supplement qi, nourishes blood, strengthens LV and KD and helps prevent eye problems that sometimes develop with age.

Autumn Millet Bake

Autumn Millet Bake
Serves 4 to 6.
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil, plus oil for the dish
3/4 cup millet
1 medium butternut or other winter squash or 1 small pumpkin, peeled seeded and cut into 1-inch cubes
¾ cup fresh mullberies
¼ cup goji berries
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon minced sage leaves or 1 teaspoon dried
3 whole cloves
2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey
1 cup vegetable stock or water, warmed
1/4 cup pumpkin seeds
1. Preheat the oven to 375F and grease a 2-quart casserole, a large gratin dish, or a 9×13-inch baking dish with olive oil.
2. Put 2 tablespoons of the oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. When hot, add the millet and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant and golden, about 3 minutes (note: don’t overdo it). Spread in the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
3.Scatter the squash or pumpkin cubes and the mulberries and goji berries on top of the millet. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and the sage and drizzle with syrup.
4.Carefully pour the warmed stock over all.
5. Cover tightly with foil and bake without disturbing, for 45 minutes.
6. Carefully uncover and turn the oven to 400F. As discreetly as possible, sneak a taste and adjust the seasoning. If it looks too dry, add a spoonful or two of water or stock. (note: This is key! The millet should be close to being cooked through at this point, if not you need to add liquid and keep it moist and cooking).
7. Sprinkle the pumpkin seeds on top, and return the dish to the oven. Bake until the mixture bubbles and the top is browned (note: and the millet is cooked through), another 10 minutes or so. Serve piping hot or at room temperature

Mullberries: Slightly cold, sweet. Quenches thirst, nourishes blood, lubricates lung, calms spirit, detoxifies, tonifies KD, relieves constipation, promotes diuresis.
Goji Berries: Neutral, sweet. Lung, Liver, Kidney. Nourishes Liver and Kidney, improves vision, moistens lungs.
Cloves: Pungent, warm. ST, KD. Warms middle jiao, dispels internal cold, warms KD, stops pain.
Honey: Sweet, Neutral. SP, LU, LI. Nourishes and harmonizes middle jiao, moistens dryness,

Steamed Corn Bread

Serves 6 people

1 C grated apple — Cool, sweet and slightly sour. Strengthens HT, tonifies qi, quenches thirst, resolves mucus and lubricates LU
2 C pineapple-coconut juice — Pineapple = warm, sweet and sour. Aids digestion, stops diarrhea, dispels summer heat. Coconut = warm and sweet. Strengthens the body, reduces swelling, stops bleeding, kills worms and activates heart function
1 medium banana —Cold and sweet. Clears heat, lubricates lungs, lubricates intestines, lowers blood pressure, helps alleviate alcohol intoxication.
1/3 C whole-wheat flour — Slightly cool and sweet, clears heat, quenches thirst, relieves restlessness, promotes diuresis, calms spirit and stops sweating.
1 C cornmeal — neutral and sweet. Tonifies qi, strengthens the ST and SP, benefits the HT, is a diuretic and stimulates the flow of bile.
½ C. oatmeal — warm and sweet, strengthens spleen, tonifies and regulates qi, harmonizes ST
1/8 C goji berries — sweet, sour, neutral, nourishes blood and yin, strengthens the LU, benefits LV and KD, improves vision.

Preparation and cooking:
Blend the liquid with the banana. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. Pour into a pie plate and steam 30 minutes over medium flame. The bread is done when the toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Cheerful Cherry-Berry Beverage

Cheerful Cherry-Berry Beverage

8 Fresh Cherries-if fresh is not available try dried cherries, cut in half.
1 TBL. (10 grams) longan fruit (long yan rou).
1 TBL. Goji berries (gou qi zi-10 gm).
1-2 Cups water.

1. Combine the cherries, longan fruit, goji berries, & water in a small pot & bring to a boil.
2. Lower the heat & simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally andcrushing the cherries against the side of the pot to help coax the juice out.
3. Strain out the fruit, if desired (or leave it in & eat it w/ a spoon).

Cherries: warm & sweet, upbearing, supplements qi & blood, & disperses blood stagnation.
Longan fruit: sweet, warm, harmonizes the heart & spleen, tonifies blood & calms the spirit.
Goji berries: sweet, sour & neutral, nourishes blood & yin.

TCM: This herbal drink acts on the heart & spleen to nourish blood & yin & calm the spirit. It is also good for liver blood deficiency.

Fig and Grape Couscous Pudding

Fig and Grape Couscous Pudding

2 figs
2 cups of red grapes
½ cup of raisins or goji berries
1 cup of couscous
2 tbsp raw honey
1 tsp sea salt
1 ½ cups water.

Blend figs and grapes together until they form a thick soup. Bring water
to a boil and add couscous and blended fruits. Reduce heat to low and
boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in raw honey, sea salt, and
raisins/goji berries. Cover and let sit for five minutes, then spoon out
onto a plate and mold as desired (pudding will begin to cool and thicken
to a pasty consistency).

Makes 3-6 servings.

This recipe may be used to nourish Kidney yin and, to some extent, jing.

Figs: sweet, neutral, SP, LU, LI. Reinforces the SP/ST, moistens the LU
and throat, moistens the Intestines and promotes bowel movements. From the
vantage point of systematic correspondence, figs could be said to benefit
the male reproductive system, particularly in cases of impotence from low
sperm count. They grow in pairs, closely resemble the testicles, and
contain many small seeds.

Grapes/raisins: sweet, sl. sour, neutral. KD, LV, ST. Reinforces the LV
and KD, replenishes qi and blood, promotes production of body fluids,
promotes urination.

Raw honey: It is important to use raw honey that has not been filtered
because it will then retain active enzymes and bee pollen which benefit
the middle jiao and nourish KD jing.

Couscous: Couldn’t find any info on the energetic properties of this
grain. Seeing as how it’s in the wheat family, I would judge its
properties to be sweet and neutral – warm, entering the SP, ST, and KD.
