Soothing Sipping Broth

Soothing Sipping Broth 1 to 2 servings

1 rounded teaspoon (about 12 grams) sour date seeds (suan zao ren)
3 stalks celery, cut into 3- to 4-inch lengths
3 cups water

Toast the sour date seeds in a pan over medium-high heat until they crackle and pop and release a nutty fragrance, 3 to 5 minutes. Let the seeds cool, then crush them lightly with a rolling pin to further crack them open.

Boil the water in a small pot, then add the sour date seeds and celery. Lower the heat and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.

Strain out the celery and seeds.

Serve warm.

Cheerful Cherry-Berry Beverage

8 Fresh Cherries-if fresh is not available try dried cherries, cut in half.
1 TBL. (10 grams) longan fruit (long yan rou).
1 TBL. Goji berries (gou qi zi-10 gm).
1-2 Cups water.

1. Combine the cherries, longan fruit, goji berries, & water in a small pot & bring to a boil.
2. Lower the heat & simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally andcrushing the cherries against the side of the pot to help coax the juice out.
3. Strain out the fruit, if desired (or leave it in & eat it w/ a spoon).

Cherries: warm & sweet, upbearing, supplements qi & blood, & disperses blood stagnation.
Longan fruit: sweet, warm, harmonizes the heart & spleen, tonifies blood & calms the spirit.
Goji berries: sweet, sour & neutral, nourishes blood & yin.

TCM: This herbal drink acts on the heart & spleen to nourish blood & yin & calm the spirit. It is also good for liver blood deficiency.
